Kenya Airways Jets Collide, Flight Schedules Affected

The two KQ planes that collided at JKIA. Feb 2019.

Kenya Airways commonly known as KQ may be forced to cancel some of its short haul flights after two of its aircrafts collided at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport  (JKIA) Nairobi.

Two KQ Embraer planes collided while undergoing maintenance at JKIA which according to director general of the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority  (KCCA), Gerald Kibe, could result into disruption of services at JKIA.

“Some flights will likely be cancelled. Every aeroplane has something that it’s doing every day. If two are not available, that will really mess up the schedule,” Kibe said.

The collision occured after a plane, Embraer ERJ-190, Reg 5Y-KYR jumped off the chocks while on ground run to a hanger, and the crew tried to steer it from hitting the hangar walls, but it hit another parked Embraer ERJ-190 Reg 5Y-FFF.

Both aircraft were badly damaged and 5Y-KYR will be out of service for a long time.

“We hope that the flights will come back to normal as soon as possible,” Kibe.
