Hargaysa, 06, November 2018. Despite the lack of international recognition, civil wars that have drained her, a weak economy, abject poverty, horrific levels of unemployment, poor infrastructure and low literacy levels, Somaliland is betting on Berbera port as a driving force to the economy and a gateway to the outside world.
The port has now attracted millions in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflow and is creating thousands of jobs for the locals who would otherwise be idle. Somaliland is a nation hungry for investments.
The development partners investment took the residents of Berbera- a forgotten port at the mouth of Aden of the Gulf region- by surprise. The port is the fourth maritime crossing channel, crucial for global trade, and capable of serving 500 million people in East and Central Africa, and 22 African countries.
Somaliland possesses huge wealth in livestock as well. Based on the latest statistics, half a million heads of cattle, two million heads of Camels, nine million goats and a similar number of sheep, making livestock and animal key to the growth of Somaliland’s economy.
They contribute 28.4 per cent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GPD), whilst agriculture only contributes 11.4 per cent.
Berbera port city’s residents and their government are now enthusiastic about the port project, and the impact it will have in their area.
