Hargaysa, 11, November, 2018.

Somaliland’s minister in the Ministry of Mineral and Energy Jama Mohamud Egal, has announced that the oil exploration that has been ongoing for two years has been concluded, and Somaliland will drill oil wells and export the commodity to the world beginning 2019. The minister spoke during an interview with BBC Somali Service.

The exploration firm Genel Energy have sent samples overseas for them to determine its quality. “We have great hope that the drilled oil will be commercial viable,” said Mr Egal. Genel Energy will begin drilling of oil wells in 2019.

The minister also said they will endeavor to create transparency in the use and management of proceeds from the oil. “We do not want this oil to create problems like it has in other oil rich countries, said Mr Egal”.

He also dismissed the likelihood of there being legal challenges in the export of the oil, as well as the management of the port project development in Berbera, because of the fact that Somaliland is yet to be recognised internationally as an independent country.
