Armed with a microphone and small speaker, Salebeen Adan has been voluntarily disseminating information on coronavirus across Somaliland’s capital Hargeisa.
We caught up with him at the City Centre disseminating information on virus.
Saleeban who has worked as an outdoor advertiser, says he has taken it upon himself to increase public awareness on COVID 19.
Among the facts he propagates are essential information needed to curb the deadly disease as the country continues to record a surge in the pandemic.
“I have never seen such a devasting disease in my entire life. My strategy is to enforce people to self distance from each other. I also teach them about washing hands and where they can get reliable information on the pandemic,” says Salebeban.
“I also teach them on the emergency number they can call. My children are not leaving their houses, that is how serious I’m about the Virus,” added the 64 years old.
Somaliland plans to open up the country which has also recorded losses in different sectors as of 1st July 2020.
In the reopening, the country plans to introduce back daily commercial flights, reopennings of schools, sporting events, all borders as well as public gatherings.
The ministry of health development has cautioned the public however to be worry of the disease, asking citizens to abide by the regulations of the ministry of health and the world health organization.
Saleeban, the corona guy fighting disinformation in Hargeisa says he is doing this voluntrally, so he could be part of the fight against the virus.
This work is totally voluntary. I don’t receive any financial support from both the government and non-governmental organizations” says Salebaan.
He added that “It is an initiative that I have taken it upon myself to increase public awareness on the deadly virus. I warn the population on how dangerous this disease is to the human specie”.
Somaliland has been commended globally on how it dealt with the pandemic with has caused a devasting impact on many world superopwers.
Efforts of men and women like Saleeban needs to be commended.
To-date 10,271,223 cases of coronavirus have been recorded globally, With over half a million deaths related to the deadly virus.
5,571,914 others have recovered from the disease.
