The African Union (AU) has announced the commencement of the election process for its Senior Leadership positions. Interested candidates are now invited to submit their applications to their respective member states. The elections are scheduled to take place during the African Union Summit in February 2025.
Eight senior leadership positions within the AU Commission are open, including the roles of Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson, and six Commissioner posts.
The selection of candidates will adhere to the principle of regional allocation of portfolios, ensuring representation from all parts of the continent.
The election process, set for February 2025, will follow the principle of inter-regional rotation. To oversee the pre-selection of candidates, a Panel of Eminent Africans was appointed in February 2024.
The panel, composed of five distinguished personalities representing each region of Africa, has developed the job profiles and competency requirements for the leadership roles.
The assessment of candidates will focus on both generic leadership skills and specific thematic expertise relevant to each portfolio.
The election process is guided by principles ensuring equitable regional representation, gender parity, and the attraction and retention of top African talent.
