The President of the African Union Commission (AUC), H.E Moussa Faki Mahamat, has expressed deep concern over the recent postponement of the presidential elections in the Republic of Senegal. The political situation in Senegal, a country long hailed for its democratic model, has raised eyebrows across the African continent.
In a statement released Monday morning, President Moussa Faki Mahamat called on the competent national authorities in Senegal to organize the elections at the earliest opportunity. Emphasizing the importance of transparency, peace, and national harmony in the electoral process, the President urged for a swift resolution to the current situation.
“The democratic model in Senegal has always been praised with high appreciation, leaving no African indifferent to the unfolding political events in the country,” remarked President Moussa Faki Mahamat. “It is imperative that the elections are conducted in a transparent manner, ensuring the principles of democracy are upheld.”
The President of the Commission strongly encouraged all political and social forces in Senegal to engage in civilized consultation, understanding, and dialogue to resolve any political disputes. He emphasized the need for strict compliance with the principles that govern the rule of law, citing the deep-rooted historical tradition of the country.
“As an integral part of the African Union, Senegal plays a crucial role in maintaining the democratic fabric of the continent. It is our collective responsibility to support and uphold democratic values, ensuring the well-being of the people,” the President added.
The African Union Commission stands ready to assist and collaborate with Senegal to facilitate a smooth and timely electoral process, the statement affirmed.
