African Union Silent on Ethiopia-Somalia Tensions, Focuses on Global Conflicts instead

Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, steered clear of addressing the escalating tensions between Ethiopia and Somalia in his recent speech to the Peace and Security Council (PRC). Instead, he directed attention towards the conflicts in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), emphasizing the need for collective action in the face of global challenges.

Addressing issues of peace and security in the continent during the annual convening of African leaders, the African Union head Moussa Faki Mahamat proffered recommendations on innovative ways to sustainably address the crises in a bid to return to peace.

While acknowledging the intricate nature of various conflicts, Faki stressed the importance of Africa’s unity as a response to the fragile global situation.

His sentiments found resonance in Amb. Youssouf Mondoha Assoumani, Chairperson of the PRC, who called for unity to alleviate the suffering caused by ongoing crises worldwide.

Conspicuously absent from Faki’s discourse was any mention of the Ethiopia-Somalia feud, leaving observers to question the African Union’s stance on this particular regional tension.

Simultaneously, he urged for a humanitarian ceasefire in Palestine, expressing concern over the unfolding tragedy and challenging the international community to address the Israel-Palestine conflict with tangible solutions.

As the 47th Ordinary Session of the Permanent Representative’s Committee (PRC) kicked off on 15th to the 26th January 2024, the African Union’s silence on the Ethiopia-Somalia issue raises eyebrows, leaving room for speculation on its diplomatic approach to regional disputes.
