The Algerian Foreign Minister, Ahmed Attaf, has engaged in discussions with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken concerning the situation in the Gaza Strip. This is contained in a statement released by Algeria’s Foreign Ministry on Tuesday.
According to the statement, the discussion was held In a telephone conversation initiated by Blinken primarily focusing on Algeria’s draft resolution recently submitted to the UN Security Council, advocating for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.
It would be recalled that Algeria had put forward the resolution to establish a durable ceasefire, safeguard civilians, facilitate humanitarian aid access, and reject any attempts to forcibly displace Palestinians, following the international Court of Justice’s ruling that directed Israel to take urgent actions to prevent genocide in Gaza.
Both officials emphasized their commitment to bolstering communication and addressing real-time developments in Gaza and within the UN Security Council.
Algeria, since assuming non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council in January, has consistently advocated for the passage of a resolution aimed at securing a ceasefire in Gaza.
However, the US Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfeld, expressed reservations about Algeria’s resolution, citing concerns that it could disrupt delicate negotiations aimed at achieving a truce between Hamas and Israel.
