Despite ongoing controversy surrounding the selection process of regional lawmakers, the official announcement of the new Puntland Parliament members took place on Monday. Notably, the list includes 17 members from the Khatumo, even though this area declined to participate in Puntland’s elections.
Uncertainty looms over potential opposition from Presidential candidates, who accused the incumbent President of significant interference with elders and personally selecting the 17 positions from Khatumo.
This development follows the recent endorsement by over 30 traditional elders from Puntland, aligning with the SSC-Khatumo elders’ declaration that they will abstain from participating in the selection process for the upcoming Puntland parliamentarians.
