Amina Elmi Fareed, a member of the Somaliland House of Representatives representing the Awdal region, has declared her decision to step down from her position on the House’s Social Affairs Committee, a recent appointment made by the Speaker.
While abstaining from specifying the precise challenges encountered from her fellow committee members, she alluded to facing obstacles from her male counterparts, who she alleges undermined her aspirations to contribute significantly within the committee.
As the sole female representative in the House, Amina Fareed underscored the dearth of visible roles for women in decision-making processes, particularly within the House of Representatives, culminating in her resignation from the newly appointed role within the Social Affairs Committee.
She assumed her position in May 2023, following the passing of MP Nuur Osman Guled, in accordance with the constitutional mandate which stipulates the replacement of vacated seats by top candidates on the party’s waiting list.
Throughout her candidacy, Amina Fareed consistently advocated for enhanced female participation in politics, emphasizing the imperative of women’s involvement in shaping the nation’s governance and decision-making landscape.
