The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia on Sunday resumed handing over security responsibilities to the government forces of Somalia after a three-month pause.
The Mission handed over security control of the State House known as Villa Somalia where Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud resides and works. Also, troops turned over responsibilities of the parliament building, which is not far from the presidential palace.
The two facilities, which had been under the command of ATMIS UPDF troops since 2007, responsible for securing the presidential palace and parliament, symbolize the Federal Government’s (FGS) commitment and preparedness to assume full security responsibilities for Somalia as reported by the officials.
The drawdown is in line with UNSC Resolution 2710, which mandates the withdrawal of 3000 ATMIS troops by 31 December 2023.
