Hargeisa– Gabooye tribe sent an outcry for the inclusion of their tribe into the section of women when it comes to elections at the end of this year. Somaliland is going to hold parliamentary and local government elections.
Somaliland MPs today debate about the passing a bill into a law that mandates women and Gabooye will have a quota for each of them and won’t go to compete with major players of tribes in Somaliland. In doing so, the MPS think this will help them to have a fair representation. But a king of Gabooye Ahmed Imam Warsame protested and said ‘ Allah didn’t make us equal with women’ he added that he has no grudge against women but a respect’.
Many incognizant Somalis of American civil liberties that such action happened in the US. Black men and white women fought alongside each other to gain their voting rights. To this day, minority in the US is defined as a black man and woman for employment purposes. So far the government didn’t react about the protest by Gabooye Sultan.
Gabooye a minority has been invisible in government sector and met economic and political marginalization over centuries. Advocates of the quota thinks this step will end the absence of Gabooye from the political scene.
