British Embassy Allocates £4 Million for El Niño Relief Efforts in Somalia

In a bilateral initiative, the British Embassy in Mogadishu has granted £4 million to Action Against Hunger Somalia, aimed at addressing the adverse impacts of El Niño in South Central Somalia. The funding is designated to provide integrated emergency life-saving Health, Nutrition, and Protection support, benefitting nearly 1 million vulnerable Somalis.

Emphasizing the collaborative nature of the initiative, officials expressed enthusiasm about the partnership’s potential not only to save lives in the affected region but also to establish a robust support system facilitating the affected communities’ reconstruction.

Action Against Hunger Somalia underscores the anticipated exacerbation of the challenging humanitarian situation due to prolonged droughts, with El Niño-triggered flooding posing additional threats.

Recent reports from the federal government of Somalia indicate that heavy rains and flash flooding have claimed at least 29 lives, displacing over 305,000 individuals in south-central Somalia.
