Following his return to Hargeisa from an extended overseas stay, Chairman Hirsi Ali Hajji Hassan of the Waddani Party has addressed the recently unveiled agreement between Somaliland and Ethiopia.
Chairman Hassan emphasized his party’s support for agreements beneficial to the country, particularly in its pursuit of international recognition. However, he expressed concern that President Muse Bihi has not yet made the contents of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) public, despite 28 days having passed since its signing.
Hirsi urged President Bihi to promptly present the MOU to both the parliament and the public, allowing them to play a role in assessing the agreement. Reports suggest that the MOU includes provisions granting Ethiopia access to the sea and extending full recognition to Somaliland by Ethiopia.
The agreement has elicited strong reactions from Somalia, which views it as a violation of its territorial integrity and sovereignty. Despite Somaliland’s assertion of its sovereign right to engage in agreements with its partners.
