Djibouti President Ismail Omar Guelleh and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) leader Mohamed Hamdan Daglo Hemetti convened in Djibouti to explore avenues for resolving the Sudanese conflict, facilitated by the East African bloc.Hemetti, having recently toured friendly nations and IGAD members such as UAE, Uganda, Ethiopia, and Ghana, arrived in Djibouti on Sunday after departing Sudan via Chad.
Following the meeting with President Guelleh, Hemetti issued a statement briefing the IGAD leader on Sudan’s latest developments amid the ongoing war.
He emphasized their vision to halt the conflict and strive for a comprehensive solution to alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people.
“I presented to His Excellency President Guelleh our vision to stop the war and reach a comprehensive solution that will end the suffering of our great people,” stated Hemetti.
He reiterated their full commitment to the outcomes of the IGAD leaders’ meeting and expressed unconditional readiness to negotiate for a just and comprehensive peace.
The backdrop of an extraordinary meeting on December 9, 2023, where IGAD leaders decided to facilitate a one-on-one meeting between Abdel al-Fattah al-Burhan, Chairman of the Sovereign Council, and Hemetti was highlighted.
RSF figures asserted that Hemetti seeks the attendance of all IGAD leaders in the meeting to ensure the implementation of its outcomes, expressing mistrust in al-Burhan.
Djibouti’s Foreign Minister, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, emphasized that the Guelleh-Hemetti meeting aligns with Djibouti’s efforts as President of IGAD to broker a ceasefire in Sudan, reflecting the commitment to ending the conflict in the neighboring country.
