Military officials in Somali said Thursday they got rid of sixty-nine al-Shabab fighters in a twin separate military operations in south and central Somalia with most of their weapons seized.
Brigadier General Abdullahi Ali Anod, a spokesman for the country’s Ministry of Defense said allied clan militia and international partners in the Middle Shabelle region, killed at least 49 militants in a joint operation conducted by the National Army.
The military also confiscated their weapons as clinical operation raged at a farm late Wednesday, according to General Anod.
General Anod said government forces laid ambush attack against the deadly Al-Qaeda affiliates as they were regrouping in the farm of Sheikh Qasim near Dhagahow area under Hawadley village in the country’s Middle Shabelle province,”
The location of the farm, about 60 kilometers north of the capital, Mogadishu, was liberated from al-Shabab control in October by government forces and allied clan militias.
It would be that on Tuesday at least seven government soldiers, including a commander, were killed when militants launched a deadly assault on a nearby Somali military base.
On Thursday, Somali National Army fighters launched an attack on a militant base at Goof-Gadud village, located 30 kilometers north of Baidoa, resulting in the death of at least 20 al-Shabab militants and the injury of others. This attack came a day after the government declared a “historic victory” over the jihadis with their capture of strategic coastal towns, including Harardhere. This victory had once been the main operating port for pirates hijacking ships at sea for ransom.
