Al-Shabaab fighters attacked a military base hosting Puntland forces sparking a clash between the two sides. Sources said the militants attacked Af-Urur military base with mortars, prompting Puntland troops to respond with heavy artillery.
Residents who witnessed the morning incident reported hearing gunshots from both sides around the station. Alshabab has claimed responsibility for the attack which left the death of two soldiers.
The regional forces said they repulsed the group and the military base is under their control. However, the regional forces did not give much detail about the consequences of the attack or whether they killed fighters from Alshabab group.
This is not the first time the group has attacked a military base in Puntland. On several occasions, Puntland authorities said they will remove Alshabab from their hideouts in their territory but the group still seems functional and carries out its military operations against Puntland.
