Blinken follows up on implementation of total ceasefire in Ethiopia

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who was on a call with Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Tuesday, underscored the significance of implementing a ceasefire in the country, where the government and Tigrayan forces have agreed to end fighting.

The State’s Secretary Antony J. Blinken spoke with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed about efforts to bring lasting peace to northern Ethiopia.
Blinken acknowledged

ongoing efforts by the Ethiopian government to work towards unhindered humanitarian assistance and restoration of basic services in the Tigray Region as well as in the neighboring Afar and Amhara Regions.


The Secretary recognized the importance of immediate implementation of the cessation of hostilities agreement which include withdrawal of all foreign forces and concurrent disarmament of the Tigrayan forces.


He noted that the United States remains committed to supporting the African Union-led process, including the AU monitoring and verification mechanism.
Few weeks ago, the Ethiopian government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front on reached an agreement to end a two-year-long crisis.


It would be recalled that PM Abiy promised to implement all conditions attached to the highly commended truce with multiple reports of humanitarian aid already reaching the northernmost part of the country mostly affected by the devastating two-year war.
