President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia received Burundi’s Foreign affairs Minister Albert Shingiro who is now in Mogadishu for a two day state visit. The president thanked Shingiro for Burundi’s support and expressed hope for continued cooperation between the two countries. He also noted that Shingiro’s visit reflects Somalia’s progress in recent years.
Burundi has said it will continue to support the Federal Government of Somalia’s efforts to completely liberate the country from Al-Shabaab. Burundi’s foreign affairs minister expressed the Burundi government’s support for peace and stability in Somalia and its commitment to standing with the Somali people in their fight against terrorism.
The Burundi contingent is the second largest within ATMIS. The country was also the second to deploy troops into Somalia, its first soldiers having arrived in Mogadishu in December 2007.
The contingent is primarily responsible for operations in Sector 3, which covers Bay and Bakool regions but also maintains troops in Sector 1 where they work closely with the Ugandan forces.
