Ethiopia Somali regional MP Juweria Subcis has been killed in a shooting by a soldier at Jigjiga airport on Tuesday afternoon. Juweria was a central committee member of Abiy Ahmed’s PP party. Three others including a regional MP Abdirashid Mohamed Gaaruf were injured in the attack.
According to witnesses, an airport security guard opened fire inside the airport, killing the Juweria Sub’is and injuring five others.
The President of Ethiopia’s Somali region Mustafe Agjar, saddened by the death of the female lawmaker, affirmed the suspect is in the hands of the police and he will be brought to justice as soon as possible.
Many of the victims were travelers exiting the airport. The shooting resulted in suspended operations at Garad Wiilwaal airport. Liyu Police arrived at the airport and arrested the officer who was suspected of opening fire.
An eyewitness told the media that there was an argument between armed airport security officers before the shooting, although no clear motive has emerged. Authorities do not believe that incident was terror-related.
