The Abiy Ahmed-led Ethiopian government has announced that it had accepted an invitation from the African Union (AU) to hold peace talks with the Tigray People’s Liberation Front rebels.
In a statement, the Ethiopian Government Communication Service (GCS) said the African Union had communicated in its invitation the date and venue of the talks but gave no details.
Tigrayan rebels have also confirmed they would take part after the Addis Ababa government confirmed its participation in the peace talks.
The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) said last month it was ready for a ceasefire and would accept an AU-led peace process after previously raising objections to AU proposals.
However, thel group raised concerns about the invited participants, observers, guarantors and the role of the international community.
Fighting in the war-torn Tigray resumed in August, after a five-month humanitarian truce.
The fighting has also brought in troops from neighbouring Eritrea, who are backing the Ethiopian government army.
