Ethiopian government says aid deliveries to start in Tigray this weekend

In what seems to be a reaction to the comment by the WHO boss over delivery of humanitarian supports, the Ethiopian national security adviser to the Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed says aid will begin to reach people who face hunger and disease in the northern Ethiopian region of Tigray by the end of the week.

On Thursday, World Health Organization lodged complains that no food or medicine has reached the Ethiopian region of Tigray despite agreement on ceasefire mediated by African Union.

In a statement, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO boss and citizen of Tigery said “Nothing is moving,”
Millions of people in the region are in urgent need of food, medicine, and other basic supplies.

Dr Tedros expressed concern things might remain the same for the population of the Northern region if strategic humanitarian efforts was not taken.
However, Redwan Hussien who is the national security adviser to the Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said “aid would flow unhindered” as was agreed in the peace talks, according to the US State Department.

Ethiopian authorities said Dr Tedros was trying to play down on the peace agreement and that food and medicine were getting across Tigray.
The conclusive round of talks between the two warring sides is expected to end on Friday in Kenya.

Ethiopia government and the representatives of TPLF have been meeting to discuss the implementation of the peace deal inked last week in South Africa.
Ethiopia’s government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front have committed to ending two years of fighting.

The deal calls for aid deliveries to restart in Tigray and for essential services to be restored. Millions of people there urgently need food and medicine.
