Galmadug state authorities have called for a ceasefire a day after six people were killed in clan clashes in central Somalia. Fierce fighting between heavily armed rival clan militias on Friday flared up in Kahandhaale area of Galgadud region.
The fighting displaced hundreds of people and destroyed homes in the small town. Galmudug information minister Ahmed Falagle said his government had moved in to address the situation.
The regional administration said ” It is unfortunate that there is a resurgence of clan fighting. Six people have been killed and many more injured. Galmudug has stood firm and will hold the perpetrators accountable”
The fighting comes barely two months after more than 100 people were killed and over 200 other wounded following days long fighting between Galmudug forces backed by Somali military and fighters of Ahlusunna Waljama in Guriel town of Galgaduud region. According to the United Nations, The fighting also displaced more than 100,000 people.
