At least two people were injured after a hand grenade exploded at a security checkpoint in Beledweyne town of central Somalia. According to residents, unidentified assailants last night attacked the checkpoint with a hand grenade.
The attack happened at Bundaweyn locality in the town of Hiiraan region. victims were said to be civilians. The security forces this morning launched an operation to pursue the perpetrators of the attack.
No group has yet claimed the responsibility for the blast but some people believe it is the hallmark of al-Shabaab attacks as the group previously bombed security checkpoints manned by Somali forces across the nation.
Al-Shabaab has been fighting Somali forces backed by African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom) for the past decade and raided military bases outside Somali capital and bombed dozens of Somali government installations in Mogadishu and other towns in the past years.
