The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) supported Somalia’s request to lift the arms embargo. The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the IGAD in Khartoum have accepted the request made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Somalia Abshir Omar Jama (Huruse) to support Somalia in its plan to remove the long-standing arms embargo.
Minister Abshir Omar Jama said at the 48th meeting of IGAD foreign ministers that took place in Khartoum that the arms embargo is an obstacle to his government’s plan to restore peace and stabilty.
The minister also asked IGAD to give full support to the Somali government’s plan to ask the UN Security Council again to lift the arms embargo. Meanwhile, the ministers of foreign affairs of IGAD agreed that the development projects and leadership opportunities of the IGAD organization should be distributed fairly because Somalia, one of the founding countries of the organization, did not get its rightful share in both in terms of projects and organizational leadership as the Somalia government claimed.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Somalia is cooperating with member organizations that Somalia is part of such as IGAD, the African Union and others to succeed in the government’s plan to lift the arms embargo the UN Security Council imposed in 1992.
