Kenya’s former president Mwai Kibaki has been buried today in Othaya in Nyeri County, central Kenya.
Since President Uhuru Kenyatta announced his death on Friday, April 22, the military took over key activities involving his burial arrangements and state honours.
The late’s remains were draped in the national flag, loaded in a hearse carriage and escorted by military officers in a presidential-like procession from Nairobi to his rural home. The body was later loaded into a gun carriage about 400 metres to the burial service venue.
President Uhuru Kenyatta led the nation in the send off ceremony that was attended by thousands of Kenyans. Deputy President William Ruto, ODM leader Raila Odinga and senior dignitaries also graced the function.
On Friday, various leaders across the globe attended his State funeral service at the Nyayo stadium in Nairobi. South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa, Salva Kiir of South Sudan and Ethiopia’s Sahle-Work Zewde were among the state leaders present.

Kibaki was the third head of state in Kenya’s history, serving from December 2002 to April 2013.
