Kenya’s 22-member cabinet shall take oath of office to run the new administration led by President William Ruto.
Former head of the central bank, Njuguna Ndung’u, will assume the role of treasury secretary, while former parliament speaker, Justin Muturi, will be sworn in as the new attorney general.
In a twist of political will, President Ruto retained one minister from his predecessor’s cabinet as an adviser on national security and introduced the position of a prime cabinet secretary.
This of course could raise durst within his political party. As usual, the president elect is to reward his political allies with cabinet positions.
According a BBC report, Ruto nominated only seven women to the 22 ministerial positions, with two women as presidential advisers and one woman cabinet secretary, despite promising 50% of cabinet appointments to women.
The new cabinet is expected to focus on reducing the cost of living and a food crisis caused by failed rains.
On Tuesday, Ruto said that he will need at least a year in order to reduce the price of maize flour – the country’s staple food.
