Kenya’s President elect William Ruto on Thursday met a delegation of the Africa Judges and Jurists (AJJF) . This is a network of judges and jurists, who are committed to promoting justice and development in Africa by providing legal expertise to governments, intergovernmental organizations, donor agencies, private sector and civil society organizations.
The Judges flew into the country to closely follow the hearing and determination of the petition by Azimio-One Kenya presidential candidate Raila Odinga and seven others challenging the electoral commission’s decision to declare William Ruto as the 5th president of Kenya
The delegation is led by the former Chief Justice of Tanzania Justice Mohamed Chande Othman. The other judges include Lillian Tibatemwa of the Supreme Court in Uganda, Justice Ivy Kamanga of the Supreme Court of Appeal in Malawi, Justice Moses Chinhengo of the Court of Appeal in Lesotho and Justice Henry Bossie of the President, Electoral Court in South Africa.
In a tweet, Ruto highlighted that his administration’s priority is “to have a well-functioning, efficient and independent judiciary that will safeguard public interest and protect our Constitution.”
The Kenyan Supreme Court is scheduled to announce a ruling on the presidential results on September 5, 2022.
