The president of Somalia, HE Mohamed Abdillahi Mohamed, officially gave up his United States citizenship yesterday, 1 August 2019. The event was made known via a press release from the office of the country’s Director of Communications.
The renunciation comes after legal immigration processes initiated by the president after the election.
Although the constitution of Somalia permits public office holders to have dual citizenship, the president willingly gives up his citizenship to prove his patriotism and dedication to Somalia.
President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed had spent a major part of his life in the United States prior to his appointment as the Prime Minister of Somalia in 2010.
