Another delay has come up in Somalia’s elections for members of the Upper House. Under the June 29 agreement, the elections were scheduled for today, Sunday July 25th but they have been postponed. With the exception of the Jubbaland administration, The committee expected to administer the upper house elections that would come from regional parliaments, has not yet been appointed, becoming the leading cause for the delay.
Delays in the upper house elections will also push back the overall timetable for Somalia’s main elections. The Somali Electoral Commission (SEC), had previously stated that the timetable that was issued on the 19th of this month, would be the final schedule and they expected no further delays.
The commission further stated that any delay in the upper house election would be seen as the responsibility of individual states, which have the power to elect the upper house.
