Somali Army kills 35 suspected Al Shabaab members in anti-terrorist operation

At least 35 suspected members of the Al Shabaab group have been killed in an operation carried by the Somali National Army near the town of Aborey, in the Hiran region, north of Mogadishu.

The fighting started at around 2:00 a.m. in this region of Aborey, recently seized by the Somali Armed Forces from the group.

The region is of strategic importance because it was used by Al Shabaab to send militiamen from the east of the country to the coastal part, the Somali Ministry of Information explained in a statement.

“The Somali government is grateful to its people who are working closely in this war to end terrorism. The deviant Al Shabaab militiamen must know that surrender is the only way to save themselves from these operations,” the ministry reiterated in its statement.

On the other hand, the Ministry reported the arrest of ten Al Shabaab members in Waydow, Yaaqshid and Heliwaa. Weapons and other materials were found in the properties searched. The suspects were allegedly involved in assassinations and bombings in Mogadishu.

The Somali government announced on Monday the killing of more than 100 suspected Al Shabaab members in the south of the country and said the operations had enabled security forces to wrest control of more than 20 locations from Alshabab.

Somalia is facing an increase in the number of attacks by the Al Shabaab, both in the capital and other areas in the south of the country, which has led the president, Hassan Shaykh Mohamud, to promise to focus his efforts on security during the first 100 days of his mandate.
