The European Commission Director-General for International Cooperation and Development (DEVCO) Mr Stefano Manservisi met with the Prime Minister of Somalia HE Hassan Ali Khaire yesterday.
The PM briefed the delegation on the progress made by Somalia on their economic, governance and security reforms.
In the discussion, Mr. Manservisi conveyed EU’s condolences and strong condemnation on the recent attack on Benadir Regional Office that resulted in the loss of Mayor Engineer Yarisow as well as other senior staffs of his administration.
“The European Union is committed to a stable, democratic and prosperous future for Somalia, for the benefit of its people, in a society where pluralism, justice and human dignity prevail”, expressed Mr Manservisi. “The EU stays firm against those that target citizens and institutions to undermine stability and progress in Somalia”.
During his visit, Mr Manservisi and his delegation also met with the leadership of House of the People and Upper House. Both sides deliberated on the importance of supporting the parliament of Somalia to more effectively discharge their functions in relation to law-making, oversight and representation as well as facilitating national dialogue.
The EU delegation suggested the leadership of the parliament to continue its constructive engagement in the political process, including the review of the constitution.
