The National electoral consultative meeting between the federal government of Somalia and the federal member states has formally kicked off in Mogadishu, the capital city. All the regional state leaders are present at the venue.
The meeting is chaired by the Prime minister Mohamed Hussein Roble after he was given authority to take the responsibility of organising free and transparent elections in the country.
He had expressed optimism that the talks will result in a deal to pave the way for elections and added that he was committed to taking ‘facilitative measures that will lead to the success of this conference.’
The meeting will be the first one to be chaired by the PM after previous talks led by outgoing President Mohamed Farmaajo. Somalis and the internationalist community will be closely following the outcome of the talks amid hope that this will be the country’s last chance to get the electoral issue right.
This meeting will also be the first meeting the country’s president is not involved directly after opposition presidential candidates accused him of being a problem to the consultative meetings.
