President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has approved Prime Minister Barre’s proposal to appoint members to the Independent Committee for the Review and Implementation of the Constitution.
The committee includes Burhan Adan Omar as Chairman, Ahmed Mohamed Jama, Mohamed Abdullah Saleh, Farhiyo Mumin Ali, and Mohamed Hassan Idris.
The Upper and Lower Houses of Parliament, as well as the Cabinet, have approved the committee. Somalia has undergone a constitutional review process since 2017 to adopt a new federal constitution.
However, the process has been significantly delayed, despite the initial timeline of two years. Reports indicate that lawmakers seek to amend articles 60 and 91 to extend the President’s and Parliament’s mandates from four years to five.
