According to Somalia government forces, at least 17 al-Shabaab fighters have been killed and several others wounded in clashes with Somalia’s elite forces in the middle Shabelle region.
Military officials who spoke to the state-owned media said the operations against al-Shabaab fighters took place in Gambole village and the forces destroyed a base belonging to al-Shabaab.
Alshabab has neither accepted nor denied these claims by the government forces. Somali forces have recently stepped up operations against al-Shabaab in South and central Somalia.
With the support of the African Union Mission In Somalia (Amisom), the Somali military managed to liberate many towns in the south and central Somalia including the capital. Al-Shabaab lost control of the Somali capital in 2011 after days-long fighting with SNA backed by Amisom.
