Somalia National Army has recaptured two small towns in southwest of the country following operations against al-Shabaab. Somali military in a statement said its US trained elite forces known as DANAB carried out major operations in Lower Shabelle and Bay regions to liberate Al-Shabaab control areas of southwestern Somalia.
The military officials said the forces of the 4th Brigade of the 16th Battalion of the Somali National Army’s DANAB took control of Leego in Lower Shabelle and Jameo areas of Bay.
During the operations, several Al-Shabaab fighters were killed and weapons recovered. According to the statement, DANAB commandos will continue their operations until they remove Al-Shabaab from Lower Shabelle and Bay regions in the South West State.
The development comes amid the security of Mogadishu being tightened ahead of the EID festival and presidential elections.The country’s police commissioner, Abdi Hassan Mohamed Hijar said that the police force will double efforts to tighten the security of Mogadishu during Eid days.
