Somalia’s house of representatives have finally passed a unilateral resolution to extend President Farmajo leadership for another two years in office. The parliament’s decision almost certainly kills any negotiated settlement to the electoral crisis that has gripped Somalia for months.
The endorsed resolution gave Somalia’s National electoral Commission two years ultimatum to hold elections in the country. The decision by the parliament was welcomed by president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo.
The Opposition Presidential candidates and some federal state members have denounced the resolution and described it as a misfortune. They also criticised President Farmajo’s leadership.
The extension comes hours after the immediate former Banaadir police boss, Sadak Omar Hassan aka Sadak John suspended parliamentary session in Mogadishu. Sadak John asked the members of the parliament to seek a fresh mandate from their people, saying he was against any term extension.
Sadak John said he took the decision to suspend today’s parliament session to avoid violence and power grab and in a few hours he was fired from the office.
