Somalia’s electoral commission demands regional gov’ts begin polls

The Federal Election Implementation Team has accused the National Consultative Assembly of delaying the lower house elections. The electoral commission said in a statement that it was working to conclude the election by December 24th but that there were “significant setbacks.”

It demanded that Puntland, Jubaland and Hirshabelle regions begin the process for the Lower House elections within the next two days or come forth with the reasons for delay.

The ultimatum comes as the opposition has suggested boycotting the process over widespread vote-rigging allegations that have put the credibility of the indirect poll at jeopardy.

The electoral commission called on the members of the National Consultative Assembly to expedite the polls. So far, less than 30 members have been elected to Somalia’s incoming parliament, with more than 250 members remaining.
