Somalia’s Puntland state opposition questions the election time declared by the regional leader

The former Somalia’s Puntland Electoral Commission Chairman Guled Salah Barre, has opposed the decree issued by President Saeed Abdullah Deni of Puntland’s local government elections date, saying that the time set for the election is impossible.

Guled Salah Barre, who is now one of the leading regional oppositions, added that there is still a lot to be done in the preparations for the registration of the election.

His statement comes after President Saeed Deni issued a decree Sunday saying that on May 25, the local council elections in Puntland will take place, which was already boycotted by some of the opposition political organizations.

However, Puntland State President Said Abdullahi Deni signed a presidential decree specifying the date for conducting the second phase of local government elections throughout Puntland State of Somalia. The elections will take place 6 months before the Puntland President’s term of office comes to end.
