The war-ridden Tigray has started coming back to life after Pretoria peace deal that saw major amenities resuming operation. The newly appointed China Foreign Minister Qin Gang pledged support for reconstruction efforts in the northern region of Ethiopia as key part of his tour agenda in Africa.
Addis Ababa on Tuesday welcomed China Foreign Minister Qin Gang as his first port of call in a week-long tour of five African nations. Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was on hand to receive the FM to a meeting.
During the deliberation, Qin Gang gave Beijing full support for reconstruction efforts in war-torn Ethiopia
In his readout, Qin said Beijing was willing to expand bilateral cooperation in various fields and would “participate in the reconstruction process”
While encouraging “more Chinese companies to invest in Ethiopia”, Qin confirmed that China sent food, vaccines and other humanitarian aid to help people in Tigray adding that his country “will continue to do so and will be actively involved in rebuilding conflict-affected areas,”
During the war, China evacuated about 600 citizens working on engineering projects and industrial parks in Tigray in 2020. It would be recalled that TPLF force on Tuesday handed over their heavy weapons as part of cessation of hostilities and a spokesperson for the Tigrayans confirmed the withdrawal of the Eritrean forces in the region signaling observation the peace deal.
