Twelve members affiliated with Daesh, commonly known as ISIS, have surrendered to Somalia’s Puntland security forces. This event took place in the mountainous region of Bari. According to the police report, the group comprises six foreign fighters, consisting of four Ethiopians and two Sudanese, while the remaining six individuals are Somali citizens.
The surrender took place in the village of Balidhidhin, in the Bari region, where the defectors willingly turned themselves in to the Puntland forces. During subsequent interviews, the former militants expressed that they had been misled and deceived by false promises of employment. They emphasized their association with the Daesh group, stating that they had been involved with the organization for approximately a year and received training during their time with them.
Two of the individuals revealed that they, along with most of their companions, had initially arrived in the town of Bosaso, where they were offered job opportunities by individuals they were acquainted with. Subsequently, they were transported to the mountainous areas where the Daesh militants were operating.
Last week, Puntland security forces successfully apprehended foreign leaders affiliated with ISIS during a series of security operations conducted in the Amamo area of the Balidhidhin district, located in the Bari region.
