The U.S. military on Friday conducted another drone strike against alShabab militants in Somalia. This now becomes the second attack in a week since the Biden administration paused such military actions.
The targeted Shabab fighters were attacking Somali forces in the Galmudug area in northern Somalia, in the vicinity of Qeycad, said Cindi King, a Pentagon spokeswoman. According to a statement by the Somali government, the attack struck alShabab fighters and equipment during a military operation by the Danab, an elite American-trained Somali commando force, and other Somali government soldiers.
Pentagon press secretary John Kirby told the media that that Friday’s strike was carried out in support of Somali forces near the village of Qeycad. He said the strike was permitted by the powers granted by the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force.
Kirby added that just as with the earlier airstrike, U.S. troops were not on the ground with Somali forces but were conducting a remote advise-and-assist mission.
No additional details have been given about Friday’s strike.
