At leat eight Arsenal fans who were arrested in the Ugandan city of Jinja for celebrating the club’s win against Manchester United in the English Premier League in a lawless manner have been released without charges.
The jubilant gunners supporters were arrested on Monday after driving in a convoy of about five vehicles while allegedly celebrating Arsenal’s crucial win over Manchester United across the city.
Police said they were arrested and detained because they did not have a permit to hold the procession which violates the Ugandan public order law.
Later on Tuesday a joint security team agreed to free them without pressing legal charges against the jubilant fans.
English football enjoys massive support in Uganda and Africa at large. Makeshift football viewing centers are usually packed anytime some of the top teams are playing.
It will be recalled that Arsenal defeated Manchester United in one of the key matches decided over the weekend by three goals to two with a 90th minute winner from Eddie Nketiah to reinforce their title dreams.
The win saw the gunners move five points clear with a game in hand.
