The UN Security Council will meet to discuss Somalia’s political crisis as the country’s parliamentary elections are on the edge to miss the deadline. The United Nations assistance mission in Somalia noted that the UN representative to Somalia James Swan and the head of Amisom Madera will brief the UN security council on Tuesday.
The UN meeting comes less than two weeks from the date to conclude the Lower House elections with less than a half of the members of both houses being elected. Among the elected MPs are only 26 female lawmakers, a figure which cast doubt on whether Somalia would meet the 30% of women quota.
About 145 seats of Lower House members are yet to be filled. According to the timetable of the Federal Electoral Implementation Team (FEIT), the lower house elections are expected to conclude on the 25th of this month.
Jubaland authorities expressed concerns over the situation in Garbaharey. Meanwhile, the leaders stressed the need to extend the election period, given the difficult circumstances facing the Jubaland administration.
