The United Nations Security Council has welcomed Somalia’s President’s call for an emergency meeting with the regional state leader next week over the country’s Political crises.
The security council members have called on Somalia’s political stakeholders to urgently resume talks and agree on arrangements to hold elections as soon as possible and urged the political stakeholders to resume their dialogue urgently and work together, in the interests of the people of Somalia, to reach consensus on the arrangements for the conduct of inclusive elections with a view to holding them as soon as possible.
This comes days after Somalia President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo’s constitutional mandate expired. Opposition presidential candidates including former Presidents, Prime minister and Ministers announced they will not recognise him as the legitimate president, though the federal government said Farmajo will remain as the president of Somalia until a new president is elected.
