At least five Quran teachers have been killed in the Adale district of Middle Shabelle region of Somalia. Initial reports indicate the teachers were killed in an ambush in continuing clan clashes happening there.
The five victims were reported to have gathered to recite quran in the same place when armed men from a rival clan stormed the area and killed them before fleeing.
According to authorities, clan clashes have been ongoing in recent weeks in the area. Thursday’s incident happened in Raga-ele village.
Residents called on the HirShabelle state and the Federal Government to move in swiftly to control the situation and stop the fighting. They also said elders from the rival clans should now engage to end the bloodshed.
It was not immediately clear what the cause of the fighting was but fights over pasture, water sources and other clan disputes have been main flash points in most Somali regions in the past.
