Galmudug Parliament elects new speaker, deputies

Members of the Galmudug Parliament have elected Speaker of Parliament in Duusamareeb. On the Friday Session, the members have chosen Mohamed Nur Ga’al for the Speaker of Galmudug.

Mohamed Nur Ga’al won 54 votes and his rival Abdinasir Aden Osman receiving 34 votes of the members.

Dr. Ga’al has served as the State Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Government of Somalia. He is a popular Social Activist and holds a Ph.D. in Law and also worked as the Dean of Faculty of Law for Mogadishu University.

Abdillahi Hirsi Mohamed and Fadumo Abdi Ali have been elected as the first and second Speaker deputies respectively. The election of the State’s President is expected to follow where six contestants are vying for the top post.

The election of Galmudug’s second parliament was fiercely contested in between politicians allied with Federal Government and Opposition forces.
The Opposition side alleged the Federal Government of Somalia to have interfered with the Galmudug State formation process.

Although some political observers have claimed that Mohamed Nur Gacal is allied with leaders of the Federal Government, Prominent Opposition candidate has congratulated the election of the new Speaker.
