A senior Hamas official stated that a truce could be achieved within 24 to 48 hours if Israel accepts its terms. He gave the statement when the Hamas delegation arrived in Cairo on Sunday for talks aimed at brokering a ceasefire in the Gaza conflict.
This follows indications that Israel had agreed to a six-week phased hostage and truce deal before the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
The Qatari and US mediators also arrived in Cairo on Sunday.
Negotiations involving Israeli representatives took place in Doha on Saturday.
Hamas is expected to respond by Monday, with time running out before the unofficial deadline of March 10 or 11, which marks the start of Ramadan.
According to a Hamas official on Sunday, if Israel were to meet its demands, including a complete military withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and increased humanitarian aid, it would pave the way for an agreement within the next 24-48 hours.
While Qatar has not publicly commented on the meeting, a senior Hamas official confirmed to the press that its delegation in Egypt is meeting with Egyptian and Qatari counterparts to present the movement’s vision.
