DP World Port Manager Killed in Somalia’s Puntland State

Somalia’s Al-Shabaab militants on Monday shot dead the Maltese manager of DP World controlled Boasaso port, in the Puntland State of Somalia.

In early morning, a gunman shot Maltese national Paul Anthony Formosa, manager of the port of Bossasso in semi-autonomous Puntland state for P&O Ports, a subsidiary of the Dubai-based DP World.

“An armed man shot and killed Paul Anthony Formosa who was the construction project manager for DP World. He was killed inside the port and the security forces also shot the killer on the spot”, local security official, Mohamed Dahir, told AFP.

The Dubai government confirmed the death in a statement on Twitter and said the circumstances of the incident was being investigated.

“Three other employees have been injured in this morning’s incident, and all are currently receiving medical treatment,” read the statement.

One of the two involved in the murder of DP world manger succumbed to his injuries last night in Bosaso town.

Two young men were carried out the attack, one was killed at the scene shortly the killing of DP world official while the second one who got injured caught by police.

The assassin who captured by police was identified as Abudllahi Mohamed Ibrahim, according to the sources in the town.

On Tuesday Abudllahi was appeared in a video while the police asking him questions.

Al shabaab said it carried out the attack.

In 2017 P&O Ports won a 30-year concession for the management and development of a multi-purpose port project at Bosasso in the Puntland State of Somalia.

The approximate investment for the modern multi-purpose facility will be USD $336-million divided into two phases:  USD $136 million (approx. AED500m) for Phase 1 and USD$ 200 million (approx. 745m) for phase 2.
