“The establishment of the Task Force was in line with the decision of the 46th Ordinary Session of the IGAD Council of Ministers which was held in Djibouti on 27th February 2019. The Task Force is expected to study, review and advise on the conclusions and recommendations of the Council,” the statement reads in part.
The bloc pointed out that there was a consensus on the need to tackle security challenges facing the Gulf of Aden which is a strategic maritime route saying the focus will be getting a solution for the trade bloc.
“The Task Force is expected urgently chart a regional plan of action with clear timelines. Further, the Task Force will build a common position and strategy to respond to the challenges and opportunities in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden arena,” the bloc said.
Speaking about the Task Force, Mahboub Maalim, IGAD executive secretary said the task force that comprises four experts drawn from each IGAD member state, will be tasked with coming up with a comprehensive strategy to promote security in the Gulf of Aden.
“This task force will have a clearly defined mandate of providing the expertise required to promote economic development, peace, and stability in this region,” said Mahboub.
He said that countries in the greater Horn of Africa region are focusing on robust bilateral ties to tackle conflicts, violent extremism and maritime disputes that pose a huge threat to economic growth and cohesion.
“Bilateralism has emerged a strong force in reshaping our politics, regional trade, and conflict resolution,” said Mahboub adding that regional peacebuilding initiatives are paying dividends in Somalia and South Sudan.
